A one hundred and seventy five thousand United States dollars (US$175,00) corruption scandal has surfaced in one of Liberia's most undeveloped counties, Rivercess with one of the county lawmakers being accused by citizens of stealing development money. According to the citizens of Rivercess County, Representative Jerry Masseh of Electoral District #2 is now serving as a major obstacle to development in the county and accused the lawmaker of taking away from the county development fund a check valued over one hundred and eighty thousand United States dollars. The spokespersons of Doewin District, Rivercess County told FrontPageAfrica Monday that Representative Masseh took away thirty-four thousand Liberian dollars, preventing development programs in the district. Joseph Neebel and Messers Abraham alleged that Representative Messeh also has in his possession one hundred and sixty-five thousand U.S. dollars for the district and has since refused to give account of the money despite appeals from the citizens aimed at convincing him to produce the district development funds. The citizens contend that the amounts were raised during a meeting held in Neeswin, River Cess County on October 19 last year which they said was intended to construct a town hall and rehabilitate a bridge in the district for the free flow of commodity and humans. An office staff in the offices of Senator Jonathan Banny, Solomon Watson told FPA Monday that the senator was not in the position to speak on the matter. He said he was told by the senator not to give credence to any journalist wanting to inquire on the matter but to rather talk with Representative Masseh and others. Senator Banny who serves as senior senator of Rivercess county legislatives caucus according to a frontpageafrica investigation led some Rivercess lawmakers including some citizens of the county to discuss the matter at which time a major confusion broke out. Our investigation also revealed that the lawmakers began raining insults at each other forcing the meeting to end in deadlock. Representative Masseh told FPA that he did not rain insults at his fellow lawmakers as claimed but refused to speak on the corruption allegation. He vowed to hold back all clarifications on the matter until Wednesday at which time a he said a press conference will be held to clear the issue. He said it was few bad elements from the county that are trying to destroy his character while he also accused his accusers of being the ones who are eating the county's money. Representatives Masseh promised to expose those trying to cause what he described as "for nothing problem" for him and not to also give up his fight to making the public understand the really story in Rivercess as it relates to the issue money and those eating the people money. |
